For his dissertation Sampson (1968) did an ethnographic study of  novices in a cloister.  After months of ethnographic observation, Sampson divided 17 of the novices into three groups, those he called the "Young Turks," the "Outcasts" and the "Loyal Opposition. The remaining novice he characterized as a "Waiverer" who drifted between the Loyal Opposition and the Outcasts.

On three different occasions, Sampson asked each of the novices to rank the three others that he "liked" the best.  These are the data used in the current analysis. Each of these rankings was organized into an 18 by 18 matrix and correlations among the columns were calculated, giving each pair of novices a "similarity" index. The reasoning was that, to the extent that two monks were seen as similar in attractiveness by their colleagues, they probably were located in similar positions in the overall collectivity.

Then the matrices for all three occasions were stacked and transformed by adding a constant in order to insure that the values in all the cells were positive. This 54 by 18 matrix stack were analysed using correspondence analysis (Weller and Romney, 1990)
.  The first three axes accounted for nearly 50% of the overall variance and they were used to locate the individuals in the present images.

By using correspondence analysis on the stacked matrices, all three sets of observations were scaled into the same Euclidean space.  So we can examine their pattern of proximities in that space and to observe the changes in that pattern that were reflected in successive waves of the survey.

As the image shows, there was clearly something of a three-way split--particularly top-to-bottom--from the beginning.  And, as time passed, that split grew, particularly along the left-right axis.  In the illustration, I have colored the points according
to Sampson's ethnographic categories.  The red points in the upper left quadrant are the Young Turks.  The green points at the upper right are the Loyal Opposition.  And the brown points at the bottom are the Outcasts. The Waiverer is colored blue and his ambivalence is evident in the pictures.
