1. The great hall from the east (built by King John in 1207-1212). In center is the base for one of the roof-support posts, partway along the 14th-century room partition. In the background is the curtain wall, with the inner-bailey ditch at right.
2. The great hall from the northwest, with the sea in the background. Just visible at left is the edge of the separate kitchen building; in the near wall of the hall is the entryway that connected it to the kitchen.
